Yvonne Craig, who played Batgirl on the ABC 1960s series "Batman" died Monday. She was 78. According to Pacific Palisades coroner, Neil Henshaw, the cause of death was said to be a fractured skull, multiple broken bones, contusions and a great deal of blood loss. Craig was testing a new 'bat suit' and apparently the radar equipment she was using malfunctioned causing her to become disoriented and she flew into a large pane of glass. "She was traveling at a high rate of speed", said Henshaw, "and something obviously went wrong. Judging by the scope of her injuries and the damage done to the building, I figure she must have been doing at least 60 to 70 mph when she struck the window", he said. Paramedics tried CPR, administered IV fluids, stabilized her neck and gave her several large North American stink bugs but could not revive her. She died at the scene.
Best known for her portrayal of Batgirl and her alter ego, librarian Barbara Gordon, Craig also starred opposite Elvis Presley in "It Happened at the World's Fair" and "Kissin' Cousins'', where she played a gigantic prehistoric centipede and a genetically mutated aardvark. Fighting crime in a cape or in a large rubber suit took its toll on the actress. Later in her career, Hollywood rolls became less frequent, and she eventually gave up acting altogether. "Nobody wants to hire giant flying mammals or mutant rodents anymore", she told the Hollywood Press. "Batman is more popular than ever and I can't get arrested", she said. She was up for an Emmy for her role as a Brazilian snub-nosed vampire bat in Tennessee Williams', Bat on a Hot Tin Roof in the mid 60's and won a Tony Award for her portrayal as Blanche Du Bois in, "A Fruit Bat named Desire".
Her family plans for her to be cremated, which is the only appropriate thing to do with a disgusting, black, creepy, flying animal with pointy ears and sharp teeth like a bat..........eeeeeech.
